Exploring the dialogue between the National Gallery, London and contemporary artist Rosalind Nashashibi through her work as artist in residence Rosalind Nashashibi (b. 1973) is a London-based artist known for her 16mm films, as well as her paintings and prints. Her films convey inner experiences of moments and events, often considering the politics of relations in the community and extended family, while merging everyday observations with fictional or mythological elements. Like her films, her paintings move between impressions and the more concrete depiction of forms or figures. In 2019 Nashashibi was appointed as artist in residence for 2020 by the National Gallery, London; over the course of a year she worked in close proximity to the gallery's collection, research, and teams. As the gallery's inaugural artist in residence, she has explored the ongoing dialogue between the art of the past and that of today, as well as the collection's influence on her own practice as a painter. Sean Scully (b.1945) is an Irish-born, American-based painter and printmaker, best known for his monumental oil paintings which draw on the traditions of Abstract Expressionism. This catalogue showcases a recent body of work inspired by the National Gallery's own collection and in particular by J.M.W. Turner's The Evening Star (c.1830). For Scully, this elegiac picture constitutes one of Turner's most profound paintings, leading to new departures in his own work. Using the motif of stripes or chequerboards, Scully evokes landscapes and architecture, horizons, fields, and coastlines, in which his contemplative forms become reminders of personal experiences and distinctive moments. Vast, bold panel paintings with richly textured surfaces are illustrated together with delicate works on paper: aquatints and luminous pastels. The accompanying text includes newly commissioned essays, and poetry by Vahni Capildeo and Kelly Grovier, while a unique photo essay by Irish novelist Eimear McBride highlights the sweeping impasto, strong brushstrokes, and vivid colors that distinguish Scully's painting.

Daher wird im Folgenden nicht mehr auf die Stadtgeschichte Siegens an sich, sondern in exemplarischer Form auf die Entwicklung der verschiedenen Wirtschaftszweige eingegangen. Hierbei soll aufgezeigt werden, welcher Art die Verflechtungen und Abhangigkeiten der einzelnen Gewerbe untereinander waren. Dadurch soll dargestellt werden, dass die Geschichte der Stadt Siegen in besonderem Masse von den ihr innenwohnenden Gewerben bestimmt wurde, wobei in gleichem Masse die Gewerbe von den besonderen Bedingungen des Siegerlandes profitierten. Over the span of his six-decade career, Ed Ruscha (b. 1937) has created a distinctively stylized vision of the modern American landscape of gas stations, highways, and industrial buildings. Incorporating text, stark typography, and commercial logos, the artist's multivalent images both portray and interrogate the contemporary world's relentlessly packaged environment. By placing Ruscha's celebrated Course of Empire-a ten-painting installation originally created for the 2005 Venice Biennale-in dialogue with Thomas Cole's five-picture cycle The Course of Empire from the 1830s, this catalogue offers a fresh perspective on each of these disparate masterpieces. Unlike Cole's grandiose vision of the rise and fall of classical civilization, Ruscha's work comprises five black-and-white Los Angeles landscapes made in 1992 paired with color representations of the same sites as they appeared ten years later and draws attention to how often-overlooked changes in the evolving urban landscape are redolent of economic might and globalization or decline and stagnation.

Der schottische Bildhauer und Graphiker Eduardo Paolozzi (1924-2005) war Mitbegrunder der britischen Pop-Art. Bereits in den 1950er Jahren sorgte er mit innovativen Collagen, in die er Bildmotive aus Popularkultur und Werbung integrierte, fur Aufsehen - und schrieb fortan Kunstgeschichte. Seine international erfolgreichen, irritierenden Werke bewegen sich haufig an der Schnittstelle zwischen Mensch und Maschine und bezeugen sein Interesse an Wissenschaft und Technik. Mit ausgefallenen kunstlerischen Verfahren wie Siebdruck oder Sampling forderte er nicht nur die asthetischen Konventionen seiner Zeit heraus. Die Graphiken und Skulpturen zeigen auch seine intensive Suche nach einer Ikonographie der Konsum- und Industriegesellschaft.
